Write for us

Modern Music Journal welcomes pitches that help readers hear, understand or talk about music with greater attention. Send proposals through the Contact page, not as an unsolicited full article.

What to pitch

We consider explanatory pieces, thoughtful comparisons, music-history features and listening-led articles about songcraft, instruments, recording and musical form. A strong pitch names its subject, the reader question it answers and the fresh angle that makes it worth a full piece.

Make the idea specific

Choose a manageable topic rather than proposing music in general. Tell us what the article will help a reader notice or understand, what sources or materials it would draw on, and why the subject suits Modern Music Journal.

A clear and careful voice

Write for curious general readers. Explain specialist language, separate evidence from opinion and avoid unsupported claims. Disclose relevant interests or relationships in your proposal. Sending a pitch does not guarantee publication.

How to send it

Use the Contact page and select the editorial option. Include a working title, a concise summary and a little about your approach. Please do not send confidential material or a complete manuscript unless requested.

Our point of view

Listening is a way of noticing

A little attention can open up a whole piece of music. We make room for clear explanations, useful comparisons and questions worth carrying into your next listen.
